Shipping Container Uses
Over the years, intermodal containers have been converted for a multitude of different purposes and many manufacturers and suppliers will be happy to help you convert your container to your own individual specification.
In general, uses for shipping containers fall into 4 categories:
1. International Freight & Cargo
These days, ISO shipping container standards exist which define internationally accepted shipping container dimensions, sizes and specifications.
Sea containers can be easily exported to and transported in other countries without due concern for compatibility with transport networks, freight forwarders or different national infrastructures.
These days, anyone moving freight or cargo internationally can take advantage of online container tracking systems which provide the exact location and status of their shipping containers.
2. Shipping Containers Used For Storage
Containers do not have to be moved or transported to be useful.
Their characteristics make them excellent storage facilities in their own right without ever having to be loaded on to a ship or plane.
3. Convert Used Containers
Due to the nature and characteristics of shipping containers, many have found alternative uses for them which usually require some conversion, additional fittings or adaptation.
They often become, therefore, static units with a new purpose or function that in the long-term provides cost benefits and savings when considered against traditional construction techniques.
Additionally, insulated shipping containers make ideal temporary accommodation on building or construction sites for site offices and weather-proof staff rest rooms.
The following list is not exhaustive, however.
- Site offices
- Portable workshops
- Ablution or toilet units
- Accommodation units (known as shipping container homes)
- Lunch, rest rooms or staff canteens
- Training containers
4. Shipping Container Homes
Given that containers can be easily modified or converted, eco-architects have now come up with plans for a new type of eco-home which in most cases requires a number of shipping containers to be assembled together to form a large super-structure.
Some extremely impressive homes and buildings have been ‘constructed’ in this way. Without a doubt, one of the most ingenious uses for a shipping container.
